By weighing the study of effective business practice and decision making against preparation for a career of inventive promotional thinking, this course effectively encourages a balance of creative flair and corporate responsibility.

The study of business provides a detailed understanding of the way organisations work, how they operate within their specific environment and the impact on individuals working within them.

This pathway develops a general knowledge of business to complement a more specialised area of study. Modules introduce key themes, specifically, business operations (how it works) and entrepreneurship (creating opportunity within a competitive environment).

You learn how to apply business theory, identify types of business opportunity and address a range of business issues in an imaginative way. Investigating the issues confronting individuals within a business, you will develop an awareness of the problems businesses can face in general, and be able to identify a number of possible responses.

Advertising is an attractive and vibrant sector that combines marketing techniques with creative execution, and the pathway provides a broad understanding of advertising theory applied to a range of practical activities.

You will be taught by experienced marketing and advertising professionals who recognise the value of an academic perspective complemented by real-world insight.

The principal aim of the Advertising pathway is to prepare you for a career in advertising. As you embark on your career, you will have the practical skills necessary to make an immediate impact in the workplace. It also ensures that you gain key transferable skills to enhance your employability.

Key Facts

The distinctive themed approach to the Business pathway is designed to arm you with the professional skills and the critical awareness demanded by today's business world. This combines with the specialist Advertising pathway, which offers an exciting range of options, all of which have a real-world focus.

Depending on the modules studied, you may also be in the position to gain entry to the Professional Diploma stage of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) professional body qualifications.

The Joint Honours degree course portfolio benefits from a practice-based learning approach, encouraged by the common first year structure.

During your first year, you and your team put together a business plan which draws from several business subject areas, including finance, human resources and marketing.

You then 'pitch' your plan to a 'Dragons' Den'-style panel, and you could win €1,000 for your team to develop your business plan further during the rest of the year.

The choice and monitoring of an international share portfolio also allows you to bring financial markets to life, with a cash prize of €500 awarded to the best return on capital investment.
